summary | WordCamp Jinja 2025 took place from April 22nd-23rd as an empowering two-day learning and networking event for all things related to Jinja templating language (Jinja) within the context of PHP, a well-established server-side scripting language used primarily on web applications including WordPress sites. The camp was held at Jinja Senior Secondary School in Uganda with over 300 people showing up from various fields interested.
The theme this year focused broadly around learning and working better as individuals using open-source software like Jinja to create websites, develop a more inclusive digital world through the development of new resources for students across diverse regions within Africa. The event was also part of an annual drive that included training on WordPress themes such as Astra which in turn helps make sites mobile-first.
The camp featured over 20 sessions including talks by renowned Jinja developers and users from around the region like John Matovu, a well-known blogger who is one of Uganda's most active open-source authors. This year's keynote was given to Dr Abdirabiu Alin, an educator at Kenet University in Ethiopia whose work focuses on making technology more accessible for individuals with special needs.
The highlight and first event this year were the workshops provided by industry experts such as Jinja author Nicky Westwood which covered topics like creating layouts using Bootstrap 5 (a mobile responsive front-end web framework) to help create a better experience across devices. This year's workshop also introduced attendees of how data is managed with APIs.
The other big focus was on community building where everyone shared their experiences and learned from each other's insights such as best practices for designing templates, creating plugins using Jinja effectively in WordPress themes like Astra etc.
A final event this year included a charity website hackathon which saw over 20 teams coming up to solve different tasks related with the theme of inclusion. This was then presented on April 23rd by all participants and attendees.
The session concluded as an open celebration for everything that makes Jinja unique including some surprises such as a new learning tool called Codepen, one of many tools which helps design templates using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), HTML5 etc to make the experience better across web pages.
In conclusion WordCamp 2022 was both educational and empowering with speakers from different backgrounds coming together for common goals promoting knowledge sharing that would be a foundation not just in Jinja but also other areas of interest like open-source software development, accessibility through technological innovation which will help build an inclusive digital world. |
