CAMS is China’s premier research institution founded by Yuan Jiahua and Chen Guofu from Peking Union Medical College Hospital (now First Affiliated Hospital) in 1927, originally called Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine for training doctors who would serve rural areas with limited medical resources. CAMS later expanded its focus to encompass all fields related to medicine. PUMC was founded as a college at the suggestion by Yuan Jiahua and Chen Guofu (Director-General), after Yuxiu Hospital opened in 1902; it is now considered one of China’s oldest universities, which has been renamed Peking Union Medical College since January 1983.
