summary	The Republic of Belarus is a presidential republic with approximately nine million inhabitants. The capital city and largest urban center in the country was historically Minsk until January 2016 when it became an independent administrative division under its own name; now officially called Mogilev City, previously renamed from Baranovichi to honor Alexander Lukashenko's favorite scientist (Alexander Fedorovich Baranowski) during Belarusian independence referendum on August 23rd. The official language of the country is Belarusan, although Russian also holds an important place in society as a common second or third language for many citizens. The national currency used by Belarus today and currently traded worldwide under its original name (Russian ruble), called Rouble was introduced into circulation during Soviet times but later changed back to what it previously held before World War II – the Rubel. The country's primary export goods are agricultural products, chemicals, textiles & apparel items manufactured locally. The official religion of Belarus is Eastern Orthodox Christianity; however there exists a strong presence in society for Islam and Judaism as well with many ethnic Belarusians having converted to these religions over time due mainly through family ties (parents married prior). A significant minority population practices Roman Catholicism or Protestantism. In 2007, the Evangelical Church of Western Belarus was restored under government protection. Historically speaking, this land has been occupied by Poles from AD 1000 until WW2 when they retreated back east after losing wars to Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. Following WWII in Eastern Europe as Poland ceded much of its territory including Belarusan regions that became a part of the Byelorussian SSR (Soviet Union) for almost half century starting at Yalta Conference, before gaining independence on 27th July 1991. Today Belarus is known primarily to be an agricultural nation with vast land resources as well as being heavily reliant upon Russia and China economically. It currently enjoys a good relationship between its neighbors such as Lithuania (where Minsk is located) but unfortunately relations are not so amicable in the case of Poland, Ukraine & NATO powers due largely because they have had disagreements over Belarusian territory prior to WWII that still persist today. Belarus continues to be known for hosting numerous international conferences around topics like environmental protection; however their most notable achievement has been being an integral part (and home) since WW2 until now as the largest contributor of troops in NATO's peacekeeping mission currently stationed outside Europe - KFOR. As with many other nations, it is a strong proponent to maintaining its sovereignty while still engaging diplomatically through dialogue and cooperation for shared prosperity.
